His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Timotheos, the then Metropolitan of the Eparchy of Tiruvalla, through his far-reaching vision of the mission of the Church and for the overall development of the Northern Region of the Eparchy, took initiatives to bifurcate the Eparchy of Tiruvalla and to create the new Eparchy of Muvattupuzha. The proposal was accepted by the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, who made canonical provision for the establishment of the Eparchy of Muvattupuzha on 15 January 2003. The Holy Father appointed His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Mar Koorilos as its first Metropolitan. The installation took place on 6 February 2003 at Vazhappilly, Muvattupuzha. His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Mar Koorilos initiated organising departments and institutions for the effective realisation of the goals set by the new Eparchy.
In order to train the candidates for priesthood for the Eparchy of Muvattupuzha HE Thomas Mar Koorilos founded a Minor Seminary on June 2003 at Anjoor, under the name “Gurusannidhi”. On a temporary basis the Seminary started functioning at St. George Syro-Malankara Catholic Church at Anjoor. The blessing of the Seminary building took place during the Holy Qurbono which was presided over by HE Thomas Mar Koorilos. Very Rev. Fr. Peter Kochery delivered the homily. Afterwards there was an official meeting, presided over by HE and the key note address was delivered by Monsignor John Varghese Eswarankudiyil, the then Proto-syncellus of the Eparchy. Rev. Fr. John Makkappallil was appointed as the first Rector.
On 01 June 2004 the Seminary was moved to Bethany Campus at Vengola. The foundation stone of the new Seminary building was blessed by the Apostolic Nuncio His Grace Archbishop Pedro Lopez Quintana and it was laid by H.E Thomas Mar Koorilos at Vengola on 15 October 2004. The seminary was blessed with many candidates at its budding stage and it functioned at Vengola until June 2008.
After five years of leadership in the Diocese His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Mar Koorilos was appointed Metropolitan-Archbishop of Tiruvalla on 2 May 2007. HE Abraham Mar Julios was installed as the second Eparch of Muvattupuzha on February 9, 2008. On 01 June 2008 HE moved Seminary from Vengola to Vimalgiri Pastoral Centre at Keezhillam. The Seminary was functioned at this Centre for 11 years.
On 12 June 2019 Most Rev. Dr. Yoohanon Mar Theodosius was appointed as the third Bishop of the Eparchy of Muvattupuzha. HE moved the Minor Seminary to Vimalgiri Bishop’s House at Vazhappilly, Muvattupuzha on 23 August 2019.
